A 49-year-old labourer of DeVeldt, Berbice River, is in police custody as investigations continue into the death of 68-year-old Cledwin Gordon, also known as “Smokey.”
According to police in Regional Division #6, Gordon was reported missing after allegedly being involved in an altercation with the suspect on Friday, October 10, 2025.
Following up on information received, police ranks visited DeVeldt Village around 12:39 hrs on Saturday, October 11, and recovered a cutlass suspected to have been used in the altercation. The suspect was subsequently arrested, and the weapon was lodged as evidence.
On Sunday morning, Gordon’s body was discovered floating in the Berbice River near DeVeldt Village.
Investigators retrieved and examined the remains before escorting them to the Bath Settlement Regional Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead. The body was later taken to Bailey’s Funeral Home, pending an autopsy.
Police confirmed that the suspect was interviewed on Monday, October 13, and remains in custody as the investigation continues.
