Persons dumping garbage illegally in city will be arrested – warns City Council

THE Georgetown City Council with the help of the City Constabulary and the Guyana Police Force will be taking a firmer stand to curb illegal garbage dumping in the city, says acting Mayor of Georgetown, Mr Ranwell Jordan.

altHe made this disclosure at a press conference yesterday and indicated that a firm decision has been taken to arrest persons found dumping garbage illegally in the city.
He said further that surveys were carried out and it was discovered that there is indeed a serious problem of illegal garbage dumping in Georgetown, and he cited as an example the Stabroek Market area.  He observed that when garbage is cleared away, a short while afterwards more illegal dumping occurs in the same place.
According to Jordan, the council has been spending large sums of money to have the place cleaned as it is committed to doing all in its power to rid the city of garbage.
Jordan, who is also the chairman of the Market and Public Health Committee, noted that some city council members have been accused of illegal garbage dumping also, but if such an allegation is indeed true, he will have them arrested as well. He emphasised that there will be  no exception or special treatment for anyone.
Ranks of the Guyana Police Force will be working along to assist the constabulary in ensuring that this exercise against illegal garbage dumping is successful, Jordan added.
