GECOM, joint services prepared to ensure ‘peaceful, lawful elections’-President Ali

President Dr. Irfaan Ali has expressed confidence in the integrity and preparedness of Guyana’s electoral systems.

Speaking in response to questions about possible efforts to derail the process, President Ali said, “I think some may have the belief or they may have the desire or the genesis of what they are attempting may be very well that, but I don’t have any concerns of the stalling of elections.”

He underscored the readiness of national institutions, particularly the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM).

“I think our core systems are met to deal with these issues, GECOM has made its position clear, and we are just concentrating now on these polls,” the Head of State told reporters on the sideline of polling day activities at Base Camp Ayanganna this morning.

President Ali also pointed to the preparedness of the joint services to ensure a peaceful and lawful election environment. “I know the joint services is also well prepared, we have been given a full brief of their preparedness to ensure that we have a peaceful election and to ensure that people conduct themselves within confines of the laws,” he noted.

There are some 24 polling stations across the country where 3,106 army ranks will cast their ballots.

The general public will cast their ballots on September 1.
