Anna Regina readies for massive ‘Town Day’ celebrations

THE air in the Cinderella County is reportedly abuzz with excitement as the township of Anna Regina, seat of administration of the Pomeroon-Supenaam district of Region Two prepares to host its first ever ‘Town Day’.

altAccording to Town Clerk, Ms. Diane Critchlow, who sits on the event’s planning committee, festivities will commence on August 23 and run until August 25.
This being their first such event, the committee has signaled its intention to make Town Week an annual entertainment feature for residents of the Essequibo Coast.
With the theme, ’Fostering Community Relations and Promoting our Cultural History’, the aim of the event is to garner as much support as possible from the wider community, so as to give them satisfaction and to create a positive relationship as they showcase their cultural history.

Small Businesses
Critchlow noted that the event is also designed to showcase and market small businesses, with the aim to  explore   key markets locally and  internationally.  The organizers are hoping to make this initiative an annual feature.
The concept of having an Anna Regina Town Day was initiated by the Chambers of Commerce in 2011, under the aegis of former Town Clerk and Counsellor, Sami Rampersaud and the late Ganga Persaud, according to Ms. Critchlow.

Several meetings were conducted in 2012 regarding the issue and the Ministry of Local Government installed an IMC to continue running the affairs of the Anna Regina Municipality.
In 2013 Ms. Critchlow put forward the idea to Mr. Toolsie Narine and Counsellor Rajendra Parbulall, who were excited about the proposal and took it to a  statutory meeting in February  this year. The proposal was approved and planning for the event began with the IMC partnering with the regional administration, the  business community and other stakeholders.
Overseas Visitors Expected
And while several overseas visitors are expected at the event, organizers  are hoping that it  will  spur economic activity in the areas of fashion, entertainment and related categories.
Among the exciting events planned is the three-day ‘concept parties’ which include the ‘All White’, ‘All Black’, and ‘Coloured’ parties that will attract high fashion concepts and creativity from patrons.
Other attractions at this event  include exhibition of goods and services, the much-anticipated entertainment feature, ‘Essequibo in Concert’, a Sports Day, Guided Tours, History Talks on Anna Regina and  a Pageant and Show.
