Three gunmen invaded the C. Punit Liquor Store, Restaurant and Bar at Vryheid’s Lust, East Coast Demerara, Saturday morning carting off over $200,000 in cash from the premises. They also battered the lone employee on duty and targeted the patrons, including a pregnant woman.
Guyana Chronicle spoke with the proprietor, Mr. John Jaundoo who related that on the day in question he was not at the business place but an employee and some patrons who were there informed him of the incident when he returned.
He said that he was told that at approximately 11:00hrs, his employee went outside the shop to pick up a few empty bottles when three men with their faces partly covered entered the shop.
Each of the men then drew firearms and ordered everyone in the shop to be quiet and to hand over their belongings.
The proprietor said further that the men went to the bar and emptied the drawer containing the day’s earnings and then made their way to the upper flat of the building where they ransacked the house and took the cash they found there as well.
He said one of the men fired a shot while the other two harassed the customers in the shop, including a pregnant woman, while his employee was badly beaten by all three of the bandits.
Jaundoo said upon returning home and checking, his average loss totalled just over $200,000 in cash.
He said that he reported the incident to the police who have since been carrying out investigations and the spent shell was recovered and taken away by the police.
Jaundoo believes that he was targeted for the robbery. The employee who was assaulted has given a statement to the police and was taken for a medical examination.
