GEORGETOWN Mayor Hamilton Green has called for a restoration of the world and suggested that the situation has reached the stage where the best persons to do so might be women.
He was addressing the opening of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church Caribbean Union Conference Women’s Ministries Congress and Mission Trip on Wednesday evening.
The event is being hosted in Guyana and the Wednesday session was at the Princess Hotel, Providence, East Bank Demerara.
Mr. Green, who greeted the mostly women gathering on behalf of the capital city, declared there is nothing more important than them in the world today.
He posited that they are special and have qualities which were not given to men.
To resounding applause, the Mayor told his audience that men, over the years, have made a tremendous mess of the world and the time has now come for them to give women a chance to restore it.
“Men have made a mess of the world and it is time we give the women a chance to restore the world,” Green asserted.
The occasion has brought together elders and members of Seventh-Day Adventist Churches from across the Caribbean and their deliberations, continuing through July 28, will focus mainly on women and girls and the roles they play in society and their challenges.
The programme is themed ‘Love in Action’ and has also gathered those responsible for women’s affairs in their respective churches across the Caribbean.
VERY FITTING
The Georgetown Mayor remarked that the theme is very fitting and wished the delegates every success in their deliberations.
He also speculated that, coming out of the discussions, will be the fostering of the dreams for a united and better Caribbean.
Green said faith among the participants should achieve their objectives of bringing to the fore and addressing the issues that affect women and girls of today across the Caribbean Region and farther afield.
He suggested that the gathered religious groupings should use the conference to give direction to young people who are, increasingly, becoming so swayed by media which do not give much consideration to moral standards and values.
Despite the unsightly state and condition of the city, which, by now, is no secret to visiting persons, the Mayor issued an invitation to the visitors and urged them not to be bothered by its appearance.
