THE Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO), an arm of the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP), has said it strongly condemns the Opposition’s continued “anti-development posture which has seen it boycotting, undermining and sabotaging” critical developmental initiatives and projects geared at improving the livelihood of all Guyanese. In a statement, issued yesterday, the group said the move by the Opposition, to abstain on a debate and vote against the proposed amendments to the Hydro-Electric Power Act and the motion on raising the limit on guarantees given under the Guarantee of Loans (Public Corporations and Companies) Act, must be seen as a distasteful display of posturing, a lack of patriotism and an attempt to frustrate attempts by the Government to create jobs.
“It is significant to note that the guarantee on loans was last raised in 1980, from $500M to $1billion, which exchange rate and inflation rate changes would demand a correction of the guarantees. The project would result in the taxpayers saving significantly. Currently, it costs between 18 and 20 US cents per kilowatt-hour to generate electricity using heavy fuel oil and 30US cents with the use of diesel, costs that are already significantly subsidised,” the statement said.
It continued that, by voting against both legislative measures, the PYO said the Opposition has placed the country’s pursuit to attain cheap and reliable source of energy in a precarious situation, while further jeopardising the investments already made and partners secured.
“The PYO wishes to restate its position that the Opposition must end its masquerade with the people on Guyana’s development and future. It must cease its obsession with puerile and partisan politics, especially with respect to the Hydro-Power project. It must work with the Government in the Parliament to further our country’s developmental needs,” the statement challenged.
Critical measures
It added:“The PYO also endorses sentiments expressed by President Donald Ramotar, who described the non-passage of the critical measures as a dark day for Guyana. We call on the President to do all that is necessary to ensure that the project materialises as the youth of Guyana are unwilling to wait another decade to grab at this opportunity that will revolutionise industry and businesses in Guyana. The PYO also congratulates President Ramotar in his efforts to be open and transparent with the Opposition, which, unfortunately has been rewarded with partisan gamesmanship.
“An attitude that callously ignores the effect their actions have on the livelihoods of the people of Guyana.”
The PYO said it wishes to put the Opposition on notice that Guyanese youth are impatient as they observe the blatant misuse of parliamentary power to politick while undermining the legitimate expectations of thousands of Guyanese.
“We are reminded of the Opposition’s assault on the 2013 National Budget, the Marriot Hotel Project, the Cheddi Jagan International Airport Expansion Project, Climate Change projects and other issues relating to the Office of the President. We will continue to be vocal and call on all youths, who seek a brighter future, to condemn these injustices. The so-called new dispensation has proven to be a bane on good governance and economic development of Guyana.”
