408 animals impounded by stray catchers in June – more than 2,000 animals impounded in first six months of 2013

A TOTAL of 408 animals were impounded last month when the Stray Catching Units of Georgetown and Berbice conducted operations in ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ & ‘D’ Divisions.

altAccording to the Ministry of Home Affairs, in June 2013, the Georgetown Unit impounded a total of 182 animals, comprising 67 cows, 53 goats and 62 sheep.
The Berbice Unit impounded a total of 226 animals, comprising 23 horses, 154 cows, 34 goats and 15 sheep.
For the first half of this year, a total of 2,012 animals were impounded, comprising 1,070 cows, 547 goats, 284 sheep, and 111 horses.
Meanwhile, the Home Affairs Ministry is again appealing to cattle owners to exercise proper supervision of their animals during their grazing period.
In addition, the general public is advised that anyone who releases or attempts to release any stray animal taken for the purpose of being impounded under the authority of the Pounds Act, Chapter 71:04, shall be liable to a fine of not less than $10,000  and not more than $20,000.
