Digicel/PowerAde Schools Football C’ships : Bynoe scores five as Marian humiliate Central High 7-1 : … BHS blank Skeldon 16-0

SKIPPER Hakeem Bynoe found the back of the net five times to lead Marian Academy to a humiliating 7-1 victory over an eight-man Central High School lineup, when action in this year’s Digicel/PowerAde nationwide Schools Football Championships continued at the Ministry of Education ground, yesterday. Bynoe found the back of the net in the 8th, 17th, 35th, 55th and 90th minutes of play, which, along with brothers Damani and Diarra Thomas’ goals in the 23rd and 65th minutes of play, led their team into the second round against an opponent whose lone goal was scored by Rishawn Charles from the penalty spot in the 20th minute.
At the All Saints ground in Berbice, Berbice High School, the zone winners of this year’s Pepsi/Scotiabank Academy, blanked Skeldon Line Path Secondary 16-0, with Keyron McKenzie scoring six of those goals in the 14th, 27th, 33rd, 75th, 77th and 80th minutes.
National Youth opener Shimron Hetmyer, who leaves Guyana tomorrow with the national Under-17 team to compete in the Regional Under-17 tournament and Jeremy Samuels, netted hat-tricks for the victorious BHS lineup, while Steffon Hinds and Mark Wrong got doubles.
At the Camptown ground in Campbellville, Dolphin Secondary needled South Ruimveldt Secondary, with Shamar Wilson scoring the lone goal of this encounter in the 56th minute, following a goalless first half where both teams tried desperately to find the back of the net.
At Carifesta Avenue, Bynoe looked on helplessly as the elder Thomas muffed two easy chances to put his team ahead when faced with a one-on-one situation with Central’s custodian, before he (Bynoe) opened the scoring with his first goal.
At the other end of the field, Marian custodian Joshua Klavtky pulled off a magnificent save on his near post to deny Charles in the 12th minute, drawing a round of applause from his teammates and even the team’s coach Dennis ‘Chow’ Hunte.
A well-weighted pass from the pint-sized Diarra Thomas, found an unmarked Bynoe at the top of Central’s box and in one movement, the lanky player swivelled and fired a first-time shot to the far post to put his team up 2-0, while Klavtky pulled off another save to deny Charles.
However, Charles’ persistence paid off for him, when he won a penalty after being brought down in the box by Liam Fraites, following which he took the spot kick and pierced a diving Klavtky to his left, to make it a one possession game for his team in the 20th minute.
Their hopes of drawing level with their opponents were given a big blow, when Damani Thomas made amends for his blunders earlier in the game with his 23rd minute goal, before Bynoe give his team a three-goal advantage at lemon time, when he completed his hat-trick 10 minutes before the whistle sounded for the break.
On the resumption of play, Marian Academy who were all over their opponents, increased their lead with Bynoe’s fourth goal, which was scored from a rebound after Damani Thomas’ free kick from just inside Central’s half, rebounded off the crossbar.
Klavtky and the pint-sized Shemroy Holder showed that their small frame was as sturdy as Charles’ when they denied him on numerous occasions, with Holder, who along with Nicholas Khan was having a wonderful day in the field, relieving Charles of the ball several times.
Central were reduced to seven men, when they lost the services of Tafari Mussenden in the dying stages of the game, when the player was given a second caution by the referee for unfair play, but not before he saw Diarra Thomas finish off a wonderful solo run by his elder brother Damani in the 65th minute.
With nothing but pride to play for, Central let their guard down and in true hunter’s fashion, Bynoe pounced on a loose ball in the final minute and calmly placed it into an open goal, before the sound of the referee’s whistle eased Central out of their misery in the field.
In Berbice, BHS held a 10-0 lead at lemon time, riding on the back of three of McKenzie’s six goals, along with Hetmyer’s hat-trick that was scored in the 9th, 19th and 23rd minutes, Hinds’ brace (17th and 36th) and Samuels’ first of three goals which was scored in the 40th minute.
Four minutes after the resumption of play in the second half, Samuels got his second goal, before Mark Wrong etched his name in the scorer’s book with his first of two goals in the 58th minute.
McKenzie completed his goal spree, scoring his other three goals within the space of five minutes, in the 75th, 77th and 80th minutes of play, goals which were separated by Samuels’ 79th minute strike and later complemented by Wrong’s injury-time goal (91st) that sealed the victory.
