CHATERAM Persaud, 44, owner of Soca Paradise disco at Columbia on the Essequibo Coast, was sent to prison on Tuesday for four years by Essequibo Magistrate Sunil Scarce, after he was found guilty of trafficking in persons. Reports said the disco owner was charged under the Trafficking in Persons Act 2005.
Police reports said between November 10 and December 14 last year, Persaud, at his disco, was engaged in sexual exploitation of a minor Amerindian girl.
The trial commenced on May 7, 2013, in the Anna Regina court. The defendant was represented by Attorney at Law, Mr. Cecil Solomon.
Prosecutor Krishnadat Ramana called four witnesses to testify. The defendant also gave sworn testimony.
