BEATRICE Smart, a mother of five, had several charges against her dismissed when she appeared at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court Wednesday last. According to the police, Smart on Friday 31st May at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, threw missiles to the annoyance of Udecia Reid.
She pleaded guilty to the charge and offered to explain to the court why she committed the unlawful act. According to the accused, her husband left home at 8:00 am on the said day to attend to a minor business matter in the city. However, after several hours had passed and her husband did not call as customary, Smart said she became worried. Consequently, she began to call her husband’s mobile phone but failed to get an answer after a dozen attempts within sixty minutes.
Fearing the worse, the woman decided to make a final attempt to reach her husband via mobile phone, before consulting with relatives or the police. Fortunately, she said, she was successful but it was not her husband who answered the phone on the other end.
With tears washing her cheeks in court, Smart said that the woman who answered the phone then informed her that she had just finished having sexual intercourse with her husband and when he cleans up himself, Smart can have what is left of him.
The accused further told the court that the voice on the other side of the line was one she was familiar with, since she has had one too many similar encounters with that woman in the past.
As Smart spoke, the alleged ‘sweet woman’, who was present in court, stood blissfully smiling, much to the amusement of those present.
Ironically she was also charged for assaulting Smart, as it was alleged that Udecia Reid on Friday 31st May at Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, unlawfully assaulted the woman.
The 21-year-old who gave her address as lot 40 Nabaclis, East Coast Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the offense. She was granted her pre- trial liberty by Magistrate Zamillla Alli and was released on $30,000 bail.
The matter was then adjourned to the 24th July.
