TWO outstanding Berbice Sportspersons, a sports organisation and Sports Personality will be honoured when the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTYSC), in conjunction with Sentinel Security Limited, hosts the first-ever Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Awards Ceremony. The awards that would be handed out are the Berbice Sportsman-of-the-Year, Berbice Sportswoman-of-the-Year, Berbice Sports Organisation-of-the-Year and Berbice Sports Personality-of-the-Year.
The awards ceremony, the first of its kind to be held in the Ancient County, will be an annual event in honour of the late Gregory Gaskin, former Executive Director of Cops Security Company (Now Sentinel Security Limited), who died last year in a motorcycle accident.
His widow Mrs Noreen Gaskin, Executive Chairperson of Sentinel Security, at a simple handing-over ceremony of the sponsorship stated that she was honoured to team up with Guyana’s leading youth and sports organisation to honour outstanding performers in sports.
She said her husband was a firm believer in using sports as an avenue to keep youths away from illegal activities.
Secretary/CEO of the RHTYSC Hilbert Foster said the club was pleased to organise the historic Berbice Sports Awards and called it another historic project in the rich history of the Area ‘H’-based RHTYSC.
The main aim of the Gregory Gaskin Memorial Berbice Sports Awards is to recognise and honour outstanding performers in sports, to identify positive role models for youths and to promote the importance of sports.
Foster disclosed that the Club had invited nomination for the awards from the general public and all sports organisations in Berbice and was pleasantly surprised at the massive response.
All four categories received dozens of nominations and a panel of judges, headed by veteran Television News Editor Gregory Rambarran, would select the winners, each of whom would receive a trophy, plaque, Certificate of Excellence and a collection of gifts.
The Club on the same date would also be hosting the Ansa Mcal Award of Excellence, where three Berbicians would be honoured for sterling and outstanding services as administrators in sports, education and community development.
