At statutory meeting… : Green, Sooba clash again over authority

GEORGETOWN Mayor Hamilton Green threatened to have Acting Town Clerk Carol Sooba put out of the statutory meeting, by City Constabulary officers, last Monday, if she did not desist from raising her voice. Sooba, who was at the time trying to make a point to Green, informed him that he did not have the authority to have her expelled and that he should know where he stands.
In the recurring trend to establish who has or does not have the power, both the Mayor and the Acting  Town Clerk as well as the Council, claimed that power, resulting in constant arguing and bickering.
“Lord, have mercy,” was the Mayor’s lament when Councillor Victor Sobers suggested that the grammar not be changed in the absence of the person who spoke incorrectly, as minutes of the previous meeting were being reviewed.
There was an exchange over words used and whether they should have been “do” or “does” and “saw” rather than “see.”
It was also pointed out that corrections which were made at the previous statutory meeting had not been reflected in the record.
Sooba was, repeatedly, accused of incompetence.

WAS CAUTIONED
Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Patricia Chase-Green often raised her tone and was cautioned by Mayor Green.
In his contribution, Councillor Ian Andrews reminded Sooba that she is subordinate to the elected body and compared her to a child who, frequently, runs to its parents when something goes wrong.
He implied that Sooba seeks the attention of the Ministers in the Local Government and Regional Development Ministry.
“But you must do your work here,” Andrews admonished Sooba, warning that: “We are heading for chaos.”
