CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), Mr. Paul Bhim has confirmed that all outstanding payments of holiday week pay (HWP) will be made by this Friday.
Speaking after workers at Blairmont Sugar Estate, West Bank Berbice, had staged a protest over their payment, for the second consecutive day, Bhim said he was made aware that 15 persons from there had protested but GuySuCo could not pay earlier because of financial difficulties.
The protesters said the money was due two weeks after the closure of the crop but President of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), Mr. Komal Chand said GuySuCo has indicated that the outstanding sums will be paid this Friday, May 17.
He said two weeks had elapsed from the time the HWP was due and the workers demonstrated outside the GuySuCo Administrative Office at Blairmont.
According to Chand, workers of Blairmont and Uitvlugt, West Coast Demerara are qualified to receive the money and he expressed satisfaction that they will get it by this weekend.
He pointed out that workers at Albion Estate, Corentyne, Berbice, received their HWP some three weeks ago but explained that the crop ended at different times on the various estates and so the schedule of payments vary.
Chand also said that employees of Skeldon, Corentyne, East Coast Demerara and Wales, West Bank Demerara are to get their money when those factories conclude their individual crops.
