Interviews held for four senior positions at City Hall – Whittaker

MINISTER within the Ministry of Local Government, Norman Whittaker, yesterday indicated that interviews were held in relation to four senior positions at City Hall.
The positions that are available at City Hall are Town Clerk, City Engineer, City Treasurer and Director of Solid Waste.

Persons on the interviewing panel included the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Collin Croal, union representatives from the Ministry of Public Works, representatives from the Public Service Ministry and a City Hall representative, Minister Whittaker said.
In an invited comment from Minister Whittaker at Parliament Building yesterday, he said that a decision was made for the position of a solid waste engineer and that recommendation will be made to the Minister of Local Government, Ganga Persaud.
For the positions of City Treasurer and City Engineer, interviews are still ongoing and for the position of Town Clerk, none of the applicants had reached the requirements and he advised that the position be advertised again, Whittaker said.
Meanwhile, he reiterated that the ministry will not be bullied into removing acting Town Clerk, Carol Sooba by the mayor and his councillors who had staged a protest in front of the ministry last Thursday.
Whittaker said that meetings were held with Mayor Hamilton Green, Deputy Mayor, Patricia Chase Green and Town Clerk, Carol Sooba. Sooba was asked to withdraw a letter she had written to the mayor and apologize for whatever rude behaviour she had displayed towards him.
This publication was reliably informed that a meeting with Minister Whittaker and the town clerk was kept yesterday to further discuss the matter, and so far Sooba will remain in her post until a suitable person is recruited to fill that position.
In an interview last week, the minister stated that it was agreed that the ministry put in place a process which would see the recruitment of persons to fill senior positions, including that of town clerk at City Hall.
He had noted that the recruiting and selection would have started shortly for a suitable candidate to fill the position and there was no need for Sooba’s instant removal.
