EAGLES United Football Club of Stewartville received their championship trophy and medals on Saturday afternoon at the Den Amstel Community Centre ground when the Trophy Stall/West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Under-17 presentation was held following the final a few weekends ago.
In that memorable final, defending champions Den Amstel were beaten by their lesser known opponents Eagles on sudden-death penalty kicks after regulation time and normal penalty kicks failed to separate the two teams.
Strange enough, it was the less fancied Eagles FC that held their nerves to silence the home team and their fans, to lift the championships trophy. They were led by their captain Ezekiel Cox who was named the Most Valuable Player-of-the-tournament.
Presenting the trophy and medals to the champions was Trophy Stall Sales Representative Leroy Jack who complimented the team for pulling off a major upset as the underdogs. Jack, on behalf of Manager of Trophy Stall, Ramesh Sunich, pledged the entity’s continued support for the development of the game in the West Demerara.
Copping the trophy for scoring the most goals in the competition was Gavin Graham of Den Amstel while Eagles goalkeeper Rockey Reddy was named the best goalie.
Den Amstel collected a trophy and medals for their second place while Bagotville/Nismes also received a trophy, for placing third after trouncing Wales 3-0.
