SCORES of persons that transact business at the Mackenzie Market are reportedly being intimidated by a group of young men who have been openly robbing people in the market with impunity.
The most recent incident occurred on Wednesday around 15:00 hrs in which one of the young men accosted a Chinese national while an accomplice took away the victim’s gold wristband and money bag, which contained his passport and other important documents and rifled his pockets.
According to a concerned businessman, although the vicious act occurred in public view no one moved to confront the men or tried to assist the victim.
“People just allowed it to go on,” the businessman said. “One locked off his neck and another took away his gold wristband and run through is pockets.”
The businessman said people are afraid because the young men usually have guns and knives in their possession.
He said one traumatised eyewitness to the latest incident burst into tears as she related to him what she had seen fifteen minutes earlier.
He said the group of about seven young men, mostly in dreadlocks hairstyle, hangout all day in one of the many “cracks” of the Mackenzie Market openly smoking and selling ganja and cocaine and drinking.
