Two senior UG officials sent on leave before special audit : – to allow for objectivity and not because of suspicion of impropriety – UG Pro-Chancellor

IN an effort to ascertain the solution to the “huge deficit” faced by the University of Guyana (UG), the university’s council has decided to conduct an independent special audit into the institution’s accounts. This was disclosed yesterday by UG Pro-Chancellor, Dr. Prem Misir in an invited comment, when he said that in this regard the institution’s Bursar John Seeram and Chief Accountant Hazel Bentinck have been sent on leave.
According to him, this was done in order to allow the special audit to be done objectively, not because the council has suspected them as being involved in any form of financial impropriety.
Dr. Misir explained that year after year there has been an increase in the university’s deficit, which is a problem that needs to be fixed.
He stated that there has not been any appointment of any special auditor for this special audit, and the replacement for these two senior officials will be provided by the Ministry of Education. (Chriseana Ramrekha)
