THE Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Gym was adjudged the best gym at the recently staged Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) National Novices Championships which concluded on Sunday. GDF amassed a total of 13 points followed by FYF (five), Republican (four points) and RHJ in the cellar with two points.
 
The three-day event that began on Friday evening in the compound of the National Gymnasium under floodlights saw Republican’s, Septon Barton, win the best boxer award.
 
Barton, who also copped the best boxer in the lightweight division, had a relentless offensive spree that gained him first round knockout victories over his two opponents, GDF gym mates, Kevin Ting-A-Kee and Stephon Mangra.
 
His gym mate, Kevin Rodney was also awarded the best boxer in the middleweight category.
 
Other categorical winners were Tyrone Lashley (junior flyweight) of Rose Hall Jammers (RHJ), Wincel Thomas Jr. (bantamweight) of GDF, Kellon King (junior welterweight) of Forgotten Youth Foundation (FYF) and GDF gym mates, Linden Daniels (welterweight), Desmond Amsterdam (light heavyweight) and Sean Phillips (GDF).
 
Akesia Arokium (RHJ) was also in the winner’s row. She defeated GDF’s Candacie Benjamin.
