AFC councillor calls for removal of persons living near Cullen seashore : – area under threat by Atlantic Ocean

ALLIANCE for Change (AFC) councillor, Mr. Naithram is calling for the removal of persons living near the seashore at Cullen on the Essequibo Coast since the area which is eroding into the Atlantic Ocean is flooded during extreme high tides. Meanwhile, it is understood that a rip rap structure is to be built to protect the area from flooding and erosion.
Speaking at the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) meeting on Tuesday at Anna Regina, the councillor also expressed the view that these residents should never have been given electricity or potable water since they are in an area that is susceptible to natural disaster.
However, Regional Chairman, Mr. Parmanand Persaud who visited the area twice recently said part of an eroded section was recently flooded during extreme high tides but the administration is currently building an embankment to protect the area from flooding.
The chairman also disclosed that the Ministry of Public Works will soon construct a permanent rip rap structure to protect the area from flooding or erosion.
Region 2 Vice-Chairman, Mr. Vishnu Samaroo noted that residents have been living in the area which is situated near the Atlantic Ocean for more than twenty years. He said efforts were made to remove them to the Onderneeming Housing Scheme but they had already constructed large concrete houses and were reluctant to move.
Another PPP/C councilor, Mr. Farouk Khan told the meeting that the residents were offered house lots but they refused to move, and he also noted that the area is a sea defence reserve.
Regional Chairman Persaud said all councillors of the RDC will be taken soon to get a firsthand look at the area that is under threat by the Atlantic Ocean. (Rajendra Prabhulall)
