A FORTY-SEVEN-YEAR-OLD cane planter was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital yesterday after he fell from the vehicle in which he was travelling and was run over by its rear wheels at 15:00hrs, near the old train line at Miss Phobe, Port Mourant.
Joseph Harry, who was assigned to Albion Estate, had earlier left the GuySuCo farmlands and was en route home when motor lorry GNN 3172 in which he was a passenger, was attempting to overtake a horse cart. He was seated on the front step of the lorry when he fell off.
Eyewitnesses said that after Harry fell, the rear wheel of the lorry rolled over his waist. He was picked up by his coworkers and taken to the nearby Port Mourant Hospital, before being transferred to New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The driver of the vehicle is currently in custody at Whim Police Station. The lorry which is contracted to GuySuCo is registered to M. Sharief of West Coast Berbice.
Police investigations are continuing.
