Indictable charge made summary but defendants refuse settlement

DWAYNE Kingston and Onica Hector (no addresses given), charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm, were allowed to enter a plea after the charge was changed from indictable to summary yesterday.

Before Magistrate Judy Latchman, they pleaded not guilty to having, on March 18, in Georgetown, unlawfully assaulted Andre Duesbury, so as to cause him actual bodily harm.
The change was made, on the successful application, by Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, of the Administration of Justice Act.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant wanted to settle the matter for $200,000, as he suffered a displacement of his wrist and fractures from being lashed about the body.
However, the defendants did not agree to the settlement and were put on $70,000 bail each while the case was adjourned to May 15.
