RAYMOND Mangru (no address given) was sentenced to nine months imprisonment, by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo last Monday, after he pleaded guilty to stealing a drake from his neighbour. Police Corporal Orin Joseph, prosecuting at New Amsterdam Court, said, on February 26 last, about 10:00hrs, Amir Ali Wazir, of Canefield Village, Canje, also in Berbice, had secured three ducks and the drake in a fenced yard.
But he, subsequently, observed that the pen was open and the birds were missing.
Acting on a tip-off, he went to Reliance Police Station, in Canje, too, where he made a report and was, later, accompanied to an East Canje location, where the defendant was seen with a bag.
It was the sound of the quacking ducks that alerted police to their presence in the bag and the thief was arrested. While the ducks were recovered, the drake was not.
The prosecutor disclosed that Mangru was previously imprisoned on a break and enter conviction, and was recently released from New Amsterdam Prison having served a six months sentence for larceny.
