WITH assistance from the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company Limited (GT&T), the Kidney Foundation of Guyana has been able to embark on a number of activities in recognition of World Kidney Day 2013, which is observed today.
GT&T’s assistance has enabled the Kidney Foundation to design and launch its website, www.kfg.org.gy., which outlines the aims and objectives of the Foundation, and seeks to establish a registry of persons receiving dialysis treatment by networking with the growing number of dialysis centres.
It is hoped that outputs from analysis of data collected by the registry will help persons in Guyana’s urban, rural and hinterland communities — who are vulnerable to obesity, diabetes, hypertension and kidney failure, and who may be unaware of the impact of these diseases on their lives and livelihoods — to benefit from the Foundation’s efforts.
The website has complete contact details for all dialysis centres, and provides information on a number of risk factors besides general facts and helpful hints. The Foundation will update the website at regular intervals, and hopes to make it interactive with members of the public.
The Kidney Foundation of Guyana has, with the help of GT&T, also produced and printed a quantity of patients’ cards, “Useful Tips to Protect Yourself against Kidney Disease”, for free distribution at all centres, clinics and hospitals.
