A house at Foulis, East Coast Demerara was razed to the ground on Saturday after its owner apparently setting it ablaze with gasoline. However, police were able to apprehend the the alleged arsonist
According to reports reaching the Guyana Chronicle a man of Indian decent in his late 40s was under the influence of alcohol and set his house ablaze at approximately 17:00 hours.
Ramit the only name given was at the time an occupant of the house, at lot 412 Foulis Housing Scheme. Ramit and his wife Janet shared the the home.
According to Janet while she was at her mother’s home she received a phone call from her husband informing her that he is going to burn the house down.
Some neighbours are contending that the incident stemmed from a domestic problem.
A neighbouring resident recalled that they smelled smoke and hurriedly rushed outside and realised there was smoke coming from the neighbour’s house.
One resident noted that Ramit had locked the gate to prevent anyone from entering the premises but a brave neighbour broke into the yard to render some assistance but according to her the entire property was already engulfed in flames.
Janet stated that she was notified that her house indeed was ablaze. Janet’s mother Leila opined that it was gasoline used to set the house ablaze. She also stated that her daughter keeps all her documents at the house destroyed by fire and all were consumed by the fire.
Leila told this newscast that Janet and Ramit were separated for eight years and had only reunited two years ago. She further stated that after the gate was broken open Ramit went into the minibus he owns and drove off in a pursuit to get away, but the police managed to apprehend him. She also stated that by the time the fire fighters arrived at the scene everything was burnt.
Up to press time Ramit was still in police custody assisting with investigation. Reaching for a comment from the Enmore Police Station proved futile.
