Hotel burglary defendant on $50,000 bail

FORTY-NINE-YEAR-OLD Deochand Phillips, who, allegedly, broke into a room at Church View International Hotel, in New Amsterdam, Berbice, was ordered to post $50,000 bail by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo on Monday. He pleaded not guilty to the charge of break and enter and larceny, which said he committed the burglary at room 19 that was occupied by Colin Edgar and stole $94,000 on January 5.
The virtual complainant had checked in with his wife and placed his money and jewels on top of a wardrobe from where the cash was stolen but the defendant was arrested when Edgar awoke, saw him and police responded to the alarm.
Phillips is expected back in court on January 28.
