Remedial works underway to improve Suddie Hospital

REMEDIAL work is in progress at the Operations Theatre of Suddie Public Hospital, on Essequibo Coast, the Administrator, Mr. Budnarine Ramnarine has reported. It followed what Health Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran said, last December, that the authorities have recognised the need for Essequibians to get efficient care and were moving to operationalise the theatre.
He revealed that, sometime ago, the facility encountered electrical problems and, as a result, it was shut down to avoid any unfortunate occurrence.
The restoration commenced in December and Ramsaran said the project is, currently, being overseen by his Permanent Secretary, Mr. Mr. Leslie Cadogan and he is quite optimistic that the situation will be remedied soon.
The atmosphere in the Suddie Hospital became quite tense in August last year when a staffer accidentally came into contact with electricity while sanitising the premises. Being unaware of a malfunctioning electrical circuit, the employee applied a water-based antiseptic and, thereafter, she felt a sensation in her body. However, quick response from her colleagues prevented the heath worker from suffering any serious injury.

UNCOMFORTABLE
Senior health officials at the hospital were uncomfortable with the situation, pointing out that it was not conducive and urged the ministry to respond to the problem in an efficient manner.
Since that occurrence, electricians and carpenters have been carrying out corrective works, which are continuing.
Meanwhile, persons in the community have testified to an improvement in the service at the hospital.
Some of those, who did not want their names mentioned, admitted that, even though repairs are being undertaken to certain parts of the theatre, the staff has always given the assurance of the best services available within.
Previously, there were several complaints about the way staffers used to treat patients but all of that seems to have changed in a short period and some are of the view that it is the result of new management.
But persons are still not pleased that major operations have to be done at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) and are requesting that more modernised and functional equipment be acquired at Suddie Hospital, which is the major health facility in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam).
