Brother on escaping charge to post $75,000 bail

TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Doodnauth Bissondyal, of Canefield Settlement, East Canje, Berbice, was, yesterday, ordered to post $75,000 bail on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.

The defendant’s brother Takordyal Bissondyal, 17, with whom he faced the joint charge, had appeared before Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo and was allowed $20,000 bail.
However, the older sibling never attended court and an arrest warrant had to be issued for him before he was arrested on Deepavali Night while walking along the Cumberland Public Road.
Police Corporal Orin Joseph, prosecuting, had objected to the grant, on the ground that the defendant has no fixed place of abode, and would likely go into hiding if granted.
However Bissondyal informed the court that he lives with his parents at King Street, Cumberland, East Canje .
Police said, on September 27, at Palmyra Village, the brothers were in lawful custody on a break and enter charge when they escaped.
