Mabaruma student dies on way to city hospital …alleged killer hangs himself

The sixteen-year-old Mabaruma schoolgirl, brutally knifed by her boyfriend at Kumaka, North West Region on Wednesday night, died early yesterday morning, while being flown to the city for  medical intervention at the  Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH).

altMeanwhile, the young man who allegedly disembowelled her and slit her throat, was later found hanging from a tree at Hosororo, also in the Mabaruma Sub-Region.  He is suspected to have hanged himself.
Dead are Bibi Zeeleena Shadeek, of Kumaka, Mabaruma Sub-Region, and Ronnie Ramjit, 19, of Hosororo, located about three miles away from Kumaka.  Shadeek was a Fifth Form student of the North West Government Secondary School.alt
Villagers, early yesterday morning, spotted his lifeless body hanging from a tree opposite the DIGICEL tower and alerted the police.
Ramjit, a minibus conductor, allegedly inflicted the injuries on Zaleena around 20:30 hrs on Wednesday at her home at Kumaka, after he jumped the fence, lured her outside and confronted her.  After stabbing the young woman, he fled the scene, but her agonizing wails were heard by relatives who hastened out to see what was going on.  They recalled when they reached her, Zeleena was writhing in pain, holding her abdomen, blood flowing from her neck, but by then her attacker had disappeared.
Information coming out of Mabaruma said the incident may have been triggered after Zeleena, who was Ramjit’s girlfriend, ‘ditched ‘ him for another young man recently.  He had previously threatened to kill her if ever she ended the relationship with him. Ever since they broke up, the suspect had been stalking her with intent to harm her, relatives said.  On this occasion, he had visited to return a SIM card her.

Immediately following the gruesome attack, Zaleena was rushed to the Mabaruma Hospital, about two miles away from Kumaka, where medical staff on duty rendered emergency treatment, but since her condition was critical, it necessitated delicate medical intervention which could not be provided at Mabaruma .  Efforts to have her flown to the city the same night proved futile.
