AN accident involving a canter late Friday at the corner of D’Urban and Camp Streets here in the city has resulted in the death of a 12-year-old pedal cyclist.
Dead is Romeo Cameron, Jr. of West Ruimveldt Squatting Area, also in the city, who was reportedly riding in the company of two of his brothers, when the canter, GPP 6830, struck him down. It happened around 18:00hrs, eyewitnesses say.
According to reports, each of the three children was riding a cycle. They were in the process of crossing the road when the canter hit Romeo’s cycle, and ran over his head when he fell.
He was taken to the hospital by the truck driver, who has since been detained by the police. His vehicle has also been impounded at the Brickdam Police Station, while he is being held at the Grove Police Station.
Efforts yesterday to speak to the child’s parents or guardians proved futile, since no one was at home. Neighbours said his mother, Pauline, had secured the house and left very early.
Police investigations are ongoing.
