A FREAK accident aboard the vessel MV Sairland in the Demerara River yesterday left 60-year-old Vibert Fernandes, of Queenstown, Essequibo Coast, dead. According to reports, shortly after midnight, while a crew member was operating an excavator aboard the vessel, “the machine malfunctioned causing the boom to fall.”
The boom reportedly fell on a piece of wood which was thrown into the air and struck Fernandes, a crew member on the vessel.
He later succumbed.
The body has since been taken to the Lyken Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem.
