THE police are currently investigating the murder of 59-year-old farmer Cedrick Jones by another farmer during an argument about animals last Friday.
According to a police release, both parties are known to each other and reside in the Bashaizon, Deep South Rupununi village.
On the day in question, about 17:20hrs at Bashaizon, the suspect was consuming ‘local pine wine’ when Jones walked past him.
“Jones stopped and spoke with the suspect during which they got into an argument over animals belonging to Jones going into the suspect’s yard,” the police report said.
The police said that the suspect reportedly pushed Jones down to the ground and kicked him several times, causing him to receive injuries. He soon after became motionless.
The matter was reported to the police and the suspect was arrested.
“I told him [Jones] to take care of his animals, that the animals are coming into my yard and damage [sic] my cassava. Jones then charge [sic] towards me and I pushed him to the ground and kicked him, but I can’t recall which part I kicked him and he never moved,” the suspect reportedly told the police.
Jones’ body was examined and photographed by a crime scene rank before being taken to the Lethem Regional Hospital where it awaits a post-mortem.
The police are continuing their investigation into the incident.
