After 8 days in custody… $6.4M burglary defendant granted $150,000 bail

OSWALD Layne, 40, of Lot 148 Pike Street, Kitty, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with break and enter and larceny.

He pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on September 24, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Compton Seepersaud and stole $5M cash, gold and diamond jewellery valued $1.4M, all to a total value of $6.4M.
Attorney-at-Law, Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat represented the defendant and requested reasonable surety be set, stating that the latter was in police custody for eight days prior to being released on $5,000 station bail.
The magistrate ordered the prosecution to investigate the reason for the defendant being in custody for eight days and instructed Layne to lodge $150,000, pending his next appearance on October 12.
