BERBICIAN Kriskal Persaud is atop the chess ladder for now as the Red Cherry Ladder Tournament got underway on Sunday at the Kei-Shar’s Sports Club in Georgetown. The former National Champion surpassed his rivals without losing a game. He drew his match with reigning national Champion Taffin Khan who secured fourth on the opening day. Junior player Saeed Ali scored an upset victory over Khan which put a dent on his fortunes.
Anthony Drayton and Saeed Ali are second and third on the ladder so far.
Play resumes tomorrow when another six rounds will be contested at the same venue.
The inaugural tournament is fast paced with players getting minutes on the clock to score wins and remain on the chess ladder in preparation for the finals. The finals are scheduled for Saturday August 11 which will see the top four from 36 matches, competing in a playoff for $50,000 cash and other prizes.
