Soldier killed in Homestretch Avenue crash

BRIAN Mitchell, 36, a Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Sergeant, in the Band Corps, was killed in a two-vehicle collision along Homestretch Avenue on Tuesday night.
Mitchell, who lived at Craig Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, was driving motorcar, PNN 5516, which also had a seven-year-old boy inside.
Reports indicate that the other vehicle involved in the fatal accident was motorcar, PVV3684, which was being driven by Taishan Shanks and had a female passenger.
Police said motor car, PVV 3684, was proceeding east along Homestretch Avenue while motor car, PNN 5516, was proceeding west.
Shankar claimed that while in the vicinity of Help and Shelter on Homestretch Avenue, he saw Mitchell overtake another vehicle and ended up in his path.
As a result, both cars collided head on. Mitchell and the seven-year-old occupant were picked up in an unconscious state by Emergency Medical Technicians and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation. Mitchell died and the seven-year-old is being treated for a broken leg. Meanwhile, Shankar and the female occupant were treated for lacerations about the body and later discharged as investigations continue.
