Police searching for miners involved in Puruni River mishap

POLICE were among others attempting to locate three miners whose boat capsized in the Puruni River on Monday morning last  around 07:00 hours. The miners had been part of a group of about 16 persons who had journeyed to celebrate Father’s Day at the nearest landing, and were returning to their Mazaruni mining camp when their boat overturned and they disappeared under water without surfacing.
One of the three missing men is said to be George Bowman, 35, of Sophia, Greater Georgetown, a father of four. The other two men were unidentified, and the police promised to dispatch a team to the area to investigate.
Maritime Administration Department (MARAD) officials have since admitted receiving a report, but said details are sketchy. They have since launched an investigation, and a team will be going to Puruni to compile a report.
