THE Guyana Relief Council (GRC) hosted its fifth annual fund-raising Chinese Food Festival last Sunday, at the New Thriving Restaurant, on Main Street, Georgetown.
The feast was one of the agency’s major fund-raisers and the proceeds will go towards sustaining its work to provide material assistance to persons throughout Guyana who are affected by fire and other disasters. The second floor of the eating house was exquisitely decorated for the occasion, to provide the perfect ambience for the diners.
Among the distinguished gathering were GRC Chairperson, Mrs. Yvonne Hinds and Canadian High Commissioner, Mr. David Divine and his wife, other diplomats, special invitees and members of the public, who purchased tickets.
The dining began at 15:00 hrs after welcoming remarks by the Prime Minister’s wife and those present were treated to a scrumptious late lunch, sponsored, exclusively, by the New Thriving Restaurant. The GRC reported that tickets for the meal were sold out days before the luncheon.
After they ate, the guests were invited to bid for various items which were donated to the GRC for sale to the highest bidders and the money obtained will be used for the betterment of the families who take lodging at the GRC Ruimveldt Hostel, also in Georgetown.
Funding for the work of the GRC is derived through donations from local and overseas supporters, as well as a monthly subvention from Government.
Some of the relief to vulnerable includes foodstuff, monetary assistance for building materials, temporary shelter, welfare aid and counseling.
The GRC was established on January 17, 1994 and the non-governmental organisation (NGO) has since touched the lives of many thousands.
