Work on the long awaited electricity grid for Matthews Ridge in Region 1 (Barima/Waini) is to start early June.
Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Hinterland Electricity Unit within the Office of the Prime Minister , Horace Williams, disclosed that the majority of the materials, such as the poles, transformers and high voltage cables, were on location for a start at this time. Williams said that the Matthews Ridge project will provide 125 KW of electricity and should be completed and ready to provide electricity within three months from the start of work by the contractors.
He urged residents of Matthews Ridge and its environs to wire their homes to the required standards so that they can access electricity from the grid immediately on its completion.
Williams disclosed that the people of Matthews Ridge had benefited from a limited distribution network in the 1950s and the 1960s, but there has not been much of a public electricity system since then.
The new network will make use of a generator already supplied by the government which has ploughed some $43M into the establishment of the grid.
