Cayman Islands Sports Minister hails Webb appointment

BUDAPEST, Hungary (CMC) – Cayman Islands’ Sports Minister Mark Scotland has backed newly elected CONCACAF president Jeffrey Webb to successful rebuild the beleaguered confederation. Webb, who hails from the Cayman Islands, was chosen as CONCACAF’s newest president by acclamation on Wednesday as he was unopposed for the post made vacant by the controversial resignation of Trinidadian Jack Warner last year.
“I have known Jeff a very long time, his passion and dedication to the sport has never deteriorated in spite of the challenges which currently confront him and this Confederation,” Scotland said.
“I have faith that under his leadership the Confederation will emerge a stronger force.”
Labelling Webb as the “best football administrator we have ever had in our region”, Scotland said that Webb, who serves as Cayman Islands football president, possessed all the attributes to succeed.
“With his can-do attitude combined with his leadership skills and signature diplomatic style, Jeff’s contributions to the growth of the sport of football in the Cayman Islands are unsurpassed by anyone else,” said Scotland.
“Given the critical and varied roles which this beautiful game plays within our global village and in a world which now more than ever needs more universal languages to keep it together, it is absolutely crucial that Football’s administration remains sound, because this is the backbone which will ensure its continued growth and success.”
Webb will complete the term started by Warner whose resignation came at the height of the cash-for-votes scandal which rocked the confederation and led to several bans and suspensions.
CONCACAF is the continental governing body for football in North, Central America and the Caribbean.
