Pensioner struck down by speeding car at La Grange

AN 85-year-old pedestrian was, on Saturday afternoon, struck down by a speeding motor car, as she attempted to cross the La Grange Public Road, West Bank Demerara.

The woman, who was identified as Latchmini Bisnauth of Independence Street, La Grange, is currently a patient at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. The driver of the car, a 38-year-old male of Westminster Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, is in police custody.
Enquires disclosed that the car was proceeding south along the eastern side of La Grange Public Road at a fast rate of speed around 15:55 hours, when, according to the driver, the pedestrian, in an attempt to cross the road from west to east ran into the path of his vehicle.

As a result, he applied brakes, but the front centre of his car struck the pedestrian who fell onto the road surface. She was picked up in a conscious state by the driver of the said motor car and taken to West Demerara Regional Hospital where she was seen and examined by a doctor on duty. She was treated for a fractured left arm and hip and later admitted as a patient in a serious but stable condition.
A breathalyser test was done on the driver, but no alcohol was found in his breath.
