One released, second suspect still in custody
THE suspect who was arrested on Sunday for questioning about the murder of taxi driver, Rajendra Puran was still in police custody up to press time yesterday. However, another man who was also detained to assist with the investigations has since been released, following the expiration of the 72 hours period allowed for such detention without charge.
Those two were held following the brutal killing of Puran, whose battered body was found in a drain at Red Road, Logwood, Enmore, East Coast Demerara, on May 3.
Police are hoping for a breakthrough in the case, for which they are tracing several leads.
Puran called Rajesh, of Lot 1296 Section ‘C’, Block ‘Y’, Diamond, East Bank Demerara, left his home for work on the evening of May 2 and that was the last time he was seen alive by his family.
His white ‘Toyota Raum’ motor vehicle, HB 9875 remains missing and police are working on the theory that he may have been the victim of a May 3 robbery/hijacking.
A post mortem revealed that Puran died of manual strangulation and blunt trauma to the head.
