FOLLOWING a false start due to heavy overnight and early morning rain two weeks ago, the Blairmont Community Centre ground is expected to come alive today when the Universal DVD Club and Universal Solutions-sponsored t20 tournament, to herald in their seventh anniversary, bowls off. The original date for this tournament was Saturday April 7 and Sunday April 8, but persistent showers preceding the first day forced a total washout, forcing the organisers, who received the blessings of the Berbice Cricket Board, to reschedule to today and next Wednesday.
The two semifinals will be contested today between Universal Solutions Tigers, who will be led by the vast-improving Shawn Pereira, and the Steven Latcha-led East Berbice Warriors from 11:00hrs.
In the second match which bowls off at 14:00hrs, Berbice Titans, who will have at their helm national t20 selectee Rajiv Ivan, will oppose West Berbice All Stars, for whom Sherwyn McPherson has been tasked with the captaincy.
The winners of today’s semifinal will clash in the final scheduled for next Wednesday at the same venue while the losers will battle each other in the third place playoff.
Players who will be on show for their various teams are: discarded West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo, Jonathan Foo, Sewnarine Chattergoon, Eugene La Fleur, Richard and Kevin Ramdeen, Veerasammy Permaul, Khemraj Mahadeo, Dominic Rikhi, Brandon Bess, Keon Joseph and Romain Boodram.
According to Managing Director of the sponsor, Vicram Seubarran, himself an ardent cricket enthusiast, the aim of the tournament, which has over $500 000 in cash and prizes up for grabs, is to expose and appreciate a mixture of players from all over the county.
Trophies will be awarded to the top two teams, man-of-the-match in the final, best batsman, best bowler, while the officials of the matches will receive medallions.
A 10-overs-a-side softball exhibition encounter between Universal Solutions Tigers and Builders Lumber Yard will be contested before the final is played. With Seubarran, who sponsored a first division t20 tournament, which was won by Rose Hall Town Gizmos and Gadgets late last year, having lots of side attractions available to those in attendance, fans can expect same once again.
