Toussaint double propels W Connection in Champions League

EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey CMC – An Andre Toussaint brace sensationally fired Trinidadian Pro League side W Connection to a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night and into the next round of the CONCACAF Champions League.

Playing in the second leg of the tie at Giants Stadium, the 27-year-old scored twice in the space of six minutes before half-time to overturn the Red Bull’s 19th minute lead.

The result gave W Connection a 4-3 win on aggregate after the two teams played to a 2-2 draw at the Manny Ramjohn Stadium in Marabella last week.

W Connection will now join Pumas UNAM of Mexico, CSD Comunicaciones of Guatemala and the winner of the series between Costa Rica’s Liberia Mia and Real CD Espana of Honduras in Group D.

The Trinidadian side’s chances of progressing took an early blow when John Wolyniec put the Red Bulls ahead after 19 minutes.

Wolyniec, who started in place of the injured former Aston Volla striker Juan Pablo Angel, beat goalkeeper Marvin Phillip with a left-footed shot after being set up by a pass from Jorge Rojas.

With halftime approaching, W Connection found their precious equaliser when Toussaint beat midfielder Seth Stammler before firing low inside the far post to put his side back on level terms.

Red Bulls had hardly had time to settle when Toussaint stole the spotlight again to put W Connection in front.

In the first minute of stoppage time, Kevin Goldthwaite’s pass to Jeremy Hall at the top of the 18-yard box was intercepted by Toussaint who took a great first touch before beating goalkeeper Danny Cepero inside the near post.

The Red Bulls tried desperately in the second half to find the equaliser but Phillip ensured there would be no way back for the hosts.
