M&CC cautions against supporting illegal barbers & cosmetologists

–putting at risk the health of all citizens
THE MAYOR and Councillors of the City of Georgetown (M&CC) are calling on citizens not to support illegal barbers and cosmetologists by sitting on their benches and stools, in an enclosure or in the open air, to have their hair cut or their nails done.
These individuals have not been registered, and may not be fit to carry out these services, a press release from the council said yesterday.
It explained that illegal barbering exposes citizens to ‘flying’ hair carried by the wind, which can cling to people’s clothing and affect their personal wellbeing.
“This is particularly true in circumstances in Georgetown where illegal barbering is taking place in very close proximity to open air stalls and stands with fruits, vegetables, and other foods such as breads, cakes and cheese,” the M&CC said in a release.
It added that just late last week, ranks of the City Constabulary arrested one person engaged in barbering on the council’s pavement, and removed makeshift tents.
Furthermore, a quantity of tools and equipment from those who were involved in this illegal practice were seized, and a number of cosmetologists were warned.
In addition, tools and equipment were taken away from those who were doing manicures and pedicures in the streets, and these were lodged at the Constabulary Outpost at Stabroek.
Under the law, those who are desirous of doing barbering and other beauty activities must be registered with the Mayor and Councillors of the City of Georgetown, and do a medical examination to determine that they are not suffering from any communicable diseases.
They are also required to be properly attired, and are obliged to ensure that the tools and equipment used in treating their clients and citizens are properly sterilized in prescribed solutions. These requirements cannot be met by those outdoor barbers and beauticians.
“Those who indulge in illegal barbering and hair dressing are putting at risk the health of all citizens,” the release emphasized.
