Policeman charged with stealing lodged property

A POLICEMAN appeared in court yesterday, charged with stealing property that was lodged at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, it was alleged that Elroy Small, of Lot 43 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown, stole a carburettor, valued $25,000, from a motorcycle, which was in possession of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) on March 18.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said another officer on duty saw when Small removed the component from the motorcycle and the latter raised an alarm.
However, the defendant ran away but was later arrested and placed under close arrest.
The Prosecutor did not object to bail but asked that it be substantial and Small was ordered to post $50,000 surety until April 12.
