Third stage of Cheddi Jagan Memorial pedals off this Sunday

FOLLOWING the present form of junior cyclists Raynauth Jeffrey and Paul De Nobrega, defending champion Alonso Greaves would be hard-pressed to retain his title when the third and final leg of this year’s Cheddi Jagan Memorial cycle road race pedals off this Sunday in Region Two. National cycling coach Hassan Mohamed, who was recently awarded Sports Coach-of-the-Year 2011, has organised the event, the fifth of its kind and which will also see cyclists pedal from Supenaam at 09:00hrs, proceed to Charity and back to Anna Regina for the finish, covering a distance of 50 miles.
The Veteran, Upright and Female Cyclists will start at Anna Regina, proceed to Charity and return to the place of origin for the finish in the race which is being sponsored by Eldorado Trading and S. Jagmohan Hardware Supplies and Construction Services.
The first  six finishers, along with the first three finishers in the Juniors, Veteran and Upright categories, coupled with the first two female finishers, will receive prizes while there will be a special prize for the first Over-60 cyclist to complete the race which also has eight prime prizes up for grabs.
Greaves won last year’s event in a time of 2h. 13:12secs, but judging from the performances of De Nobrega, who is also the defending champion in the junior category and winner of the second leg of this year’s event, and Jeffrey the surprise winner of the first leg, anything can happen on the roadways of the Cinderella County.
Other cyclists to look out for are Robin Persaud, Warren McKay, Geron Williams, Enzo Matthews, Junior Niles, Kurt La Rose, Kennard Lovell, Albert Philander, Eric Sankar and Talim Shaw, just to name a few.
Transportation for cyclists and officials to Shiraz Wharf, Parika, will leave the National Sports Commission building, 91 Middle Street, at 05:00hrs on Sunday and all cyclists are reminded to wear their respective club jersey or white jersey if they are unaffiliated to any club.
