RESIDENTS of Karawab, in the Upper Pomeroon River of Region 2, Essequibo, are loud in praise for the government in its effort to combat the spread of malaria in their village. Government, through the Ministry of Health, has set up in the village health centre a smear and testing facility equipped with microscope, where residents are tested for malaria.
Region 2, Chairman Parmanand Persaud, accompanied by Regional Development Officer, Dhaneshwar Gangoo, visited Karawab on Thursday to inspect the health facility, and had discussions with Malaria Supervisor of Region 2, Ms. Donna James, who along with Ms Trixie Cumberbatch, Malaria Microscopic Specialist, went on an outreach visit to the community.
According to Ms James, some 86 smears were taken up to Thursday last, but only one showed positive for malaria – that of a miner working in the interior. The health centre also has adequate supplies of drugs to combat malaria in Upper Pomeroon villages.
