SEVENTY-EIGHT-YEAR-OLD Juliet Cornelius of lot 55 West Watooka, Linden, lost her life on Sunday morning when a motor car struck her on the parapets of Burnham Drive Public Road Wismar, Linden.
According to a police report, the accident occurred around 07:15hrs and involved motor car PVV 225, which was at the time being driven by Corwin Cooper, a 27-year-old mechanic of lot 50 Powis Crescent, Amelia’s Ward, Linden.
Enquiries disclosed that Cooper was proceeding south along the eastern side of the said road at a fast rate of speed and whilst negotiating a left bend, he suddenly lost control of his vehicle and ended up onto the southern parapet where he collided with the pedestrian who was walking heading west on the said southern side. As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell onto the roadway where she received injuries about her body.
She was picked up by public-spirited persons and taken to the Linden Hospital Complex where she was seen and examined by a doctor on duty, who later admitted her as a patient. Cornelius subsequently died while receiving treatment at the said institution.
The body is presently lying at the Mackenzie Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem.
A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver for alcohol, and read 120 per cent and 112 per cent microgrammes respectively.
He is currently in police custody. Efforts are being made to ascertain CCTV footage in the area while further investigation continues.
