THE Stabroek News is playing political games with press freedom. It launched a blazing opposition to the government that resembled the opposition “cuss-down” politics, then scream that the government was withholding financial life-support for it.
But as the Department of Public Information (DPI) explained, Stabroek News has been feeding at the government trough, and has eaten up more than $50, 000,000M of tax payers’ money.
I believe in the free press and Stabroek News is among them, but there is nothing in our law that says that government must reward any section of the press that works to undermine and destabilise it.
Stabroek News is setting up government for a bad name it does not deserve. Guyana enjoys a free press and we all know that government has helped the media to grow.
