ONE of the three men implicated in a recent West Coast Berbice armed robbery has moved to the High Court for a reduction of his $1.2M bail. Devon Hope, who faces joint charges of robbery under arms with Delon Wills and Wayne Simpson, said, in his petition, that the surety set in the Magistrate’s Court is unnecessarily punitive in the circumstances.
Last week Thursday, the defendants, charged on three counts of robbery committed on Wazim Shariff, Zamena Suban and Zulika Subhan, all of Number 22 Bel Air Village, appeared before Magistrate Roby Benn, at Fort Wellington Court, where Hope and Wills were ordered to post $1.2M while Simpson was allowed to lodge $1M.
It is alleged that, last January 10, the trio is alleged to have collectively robbed the victims of booty worth $1.3M.
At their first court appearance, Police Inspector, Grace Bristol had objected to pre-trial freedom for them on several grounds, highlighting the seriousness of the offence in which a firearm was used, the severe injuries suffered by the victims and the positive identification of the alleged perpetrators.
Justice Brassington Reynolds has fixed February 21 to hear the case for the petitioners.
